JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Manager of US IP Engineering manages a group of Network Engineers and Senior Network Engineers engaged in the analyzing of requirements and engineering of solutions for the corporate, out of band, and customer-serving networks, with primary focus on services in the United States. Responsibilities: Supervision of functions including the: Developing and publishing of standards for routing network design, the network architecture, peering policies, and maintenance; Provisioning of adequate capacity for customer demand, in cooperation with IP Infrastructure; Managing of peering relationships and connectivity to meet business and capacity needs; Engineering of traffic using ISIS, OSPF and BGP changes; Assisting IP Infrastructure with the configuration and activation of new equipment; Handling the escalation of network outages from IP Operations and the NMC; Selection, testing and certification of new code and hardware; Analyzing of customer requirements, equipment capabilities, resources, outages, etc. to make written recommendations and oral presentations on product definitions, network architecture, customer policies, routing policy, equipment selections, and maintenance policies; Training of groups inside and outside the company; Specification of tools needed to support the functions above; Reporting on performance, workload, and results of the US IP Engineering team; Special reporting as required by other AboveNet functional areas or outside parties; Representing AboveNet interests in industry forums; Resource allocation and production planning consistent with company and customer priorities; Routine conflict resolution with other AboveNet functional areas; Customer support on technical issues; Employee performance reviews; Continuous improvement of workflow processes, methods and procedures.

REQUIRED SKILLS:
4 year bachelor degree or equivalent experience; 5+ years of industry or management experience; Demonstrated organizational, leadership & people management skills; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Extensive computer skills including MS Office and Unix programs and tools; Supervision of 4-6 Network Engineers; Strong familiarity with Internet protocols and Internet routing protocols in particular (ISIS, OSPF, BGP); experience with traffic engineering in large provider networks; experience with Cisco and/or Juniper router; Experience with any of the following is highly desirable: UNIX system administration, electrical and optical circuit test equipment, and optical transmission systems (e.g., Nortel, LuxN, etc.); Must be familiar with the operation and usage of large distributed software systems. Employee is responding for independent decision on workflow and personnel assignment to handle customer and backbone needs, and for technical decisions in cooperation with other interested parties, including IP Ops, IP Infrastructure, and the European IP Engineering team.
